Why Maka?

When I found out that my daughter was expecting my first Grandchild, I was so excited!  I’ve heard that many grandmothers begin to decide what they will want to be called once the baby arrives.  I preferred to see what my granddaughter would come up with.  I waited patiently.  Would it be Nana (Scottish), Grandma (USA), Nan (Irish), Amma (Icelandic), Mummo (Finnish), or plain, Gramma.  Any of those would match our combined heritage. Turns out it was none of those things. My granddaughter goes her own way, bless her heart.

My granddaughter had a habit of calling both her mother and me “Mama”, but that was confusing for her as she needed an identifier.  So, in a moment of brilliance, she decided to start calling me “Maka”.  It stuck, so now I am Maka, and Maka always knows.  Ask my grandkids.
